Buffalo Soldier, 9th (Horse) Calvary Before WWII; Original/Only 2nd Platoon Leader of 2nd Ranger Company, the First and Only Black Ranger Organization

(Phoenix, AZ) – Captain Retired Vincent Wilburn, Sr., a much-heralded military veteran who began service to this country as a Buffalo Soldier in the 9th (Horse) Calvary just before WWII, and was the original and only 2nd Platoon Leader of the 2nd Ranger Company, the first and only Black Ranger Organization, died May 7 in Phoenix, AZ. He was 88.

The Miles Davis Festival in Chicago recently ended, and we're taking a look back at one of the events -- when River North Dance Chicago created a collection of dances to demonstrate the fluidity, technical brilliance, and storytelling narrative in Davis' body of work.

The Discover Jazz Festival in Burlington, Vt., will present Bitches Brew Revisited as its opening night show on June 3rd, featuring Graham Haynes on cornet, Vernon Reid on guitar, Marco Benevento on keyboards, and more. In conjunction with this show, the festival is also looking for submissions from artists to re-imagine the iconic album cover for Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew."

On Sunday, September 18th at the 2011 Monterey Jazz Festival, the Still Ahead Orchestra (directed by Vince Mendoza, featuring Terence Blanchard, Peter Erskine and Miles Evans) will perform selections from Miles Ahead, Porgy & Bess, and Sketches of Spain to celebrate the timeless music of Miles Davis and Gil Evans.

The 45th annual Montreux Jazz Festival has announced that Quincy Jones will lead a July 13th homage to Miles Davis, along with Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sean Jones and Sean Rickman. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, April 14th.
