Miles purchases and moves into a four-story brownstone on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, on 77th Street between West End Avenue and Riverside Park. The move is a bold statement of economic arrival and success for an African-American at the time; Miles often tells the story of being mistaken for a house servant by a plumber called to the property.
