Miles performs the first of a number of groundbreaking concerts at the Fillmore East and West, venues booked by burgeoning rock impresario Bill Graham that were known for presenting the most explosive rock groups of the day. While Graham had booked jazz artists before, he had never landed a jazz headliner of Miles’ status. It was an engagement urged on by CBS Records chief Clive Davis, on the heels of the popularity of Miles’ Bitches Brew album with younger listeners. It was a move that had first been met with outrage and scorn by Miles, who threatened to leave the label.
