Sonny Rollins Exits / John Coltrane Arrives

Miles assembles the original Miles Davis Quintet by the end of summer: Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. To get clear of his own drug habit, Rollins drops off the scene that September; after a number of auditions, Miles calls John Coltrane to join the band in his stead.
