Memphis Connection

Miles overhauls his group at the close of 1962, replacing Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, and Paul Chambers, with Jimmy Cobb remaining for a few weeks into 1963. His new recruits share the same Memphis roots — saxophonists George Coleman and Frank Strozier, and pianist Harold Mabern. Bassist Ron Carter, classically trained and also a cellist, joins as well. The short-lived sextet lasts for a West Coast run; on his return to New York, Miles retains Coleman and Carter, and searches for a new pianist and drummer.
