Miles begins hanging out in Gil Evans’ basement apartment on West 55th Street, along with a group of musicians similarly focused on arrangements, bebop, and modern classical ideas. Others include: Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, John Carisi, Dave Lambert, Johnny Mandel. The conclave eventually generates a nonet (a project later dubbed as Birth of the Cool) in which Miles takes on a leading role, rehearsing and booking gigs, and eventually recording under Miles’ name.
