Miles tours Western Europe as part of a three-week run under the Jazz at the Philharmonic banner, along with Oscar Peterson and Stan Getz. Miles convinces John Coltrane to join the tour at the last minute when vibist Buddy Montgomery’s fear of flying prevents him from joining. This marks the first time Miles tours overseas with his own band. Except for a few special tributes, he will never perform on tour with any band but his own for the rest of his career.
