Expansion & Experimentation

Miles takes a markedly expanded approach to his lineups and experimental approach to music: structurally and texturally. From this season on and through the 1970s, Miles will forgo the idea of a consistent lineup, or limit himself to certain instruments. A number of great musicians will pass through his band—guitarists John McLaughlin, Sonny Sharrock and Pete Cosey; drummers Billy Cobham, Billy Hart, and Al Foster—many known in musical idioms other than jazz, like Brazilian or Indian music (Airto Moreira, Hermeto Pascoal, Khalil Balakrishna) and American R&B (bassist Michael Henderson, guitarist Reggie Lucas).
