Miles performs the last concert as part of the Schaefer Concert Series in Manhattan before a long-needed hip operation. The recovery will take years. He will not return to public performance until 1981, a forced hiatus filled with personal challenges and substance dependency, and that only whets the public appetite for his return. During his absence, Cicely Tyson is a consistent, supportive force.
