WHAT: Brian “Raydar” Ellis, Professor of Hip Hop and Jazz at Berklee College, leads an innovative discussion exploring the original mash-up of two distinct musical genres and cultures. An esteemed panel of noted Jazz and Hip Hop artists and historians will weigh in on this hot topic which is currently generating strong industry heat. Improvisation in Hip Hop, such as the role of the DJ and live beat making, has found a kindred spirit in straight ahead Jazz. The genres share tactics in composition and in the recording studio. And when it comes to live performance, Jazz and Hip Hop have always taken on the roll of call-and-response, and both genres have truly mastered the importance of audience participation.

This captivating discussion will also examine the historical perspective of Hip Hop & Jazz, the production of the music, along with an insightful analysis into why this crossover movement is important and what it means to the culture.
