With a hard-driving, rock-fueled band—Steve Grossman, soprano sax; Herbie Hancock, keyboards; John McLaughlin, guitar; Michael Henderson, electric bass; and Billy Cobham, drums—Miles records music for a documentary on the legendary Black prize-figher Jack Johnson, directed by Jimmy Jacobs and titled Jack Johnson. Miles records music with other lineups on other dates for the same project, but the album released with the title Tribute to Jack Johnson takes place on this day.
