Miles hires Steve Grossman, a member of a younger generation of jazz players raised as much on rock and other styles, to replace Wayne Shorter. In the next few years, a string of similarly schooled saxophonists—including Gary Bartz, Dave Liebman, Sonny Fortune, Sam Morrison—pass through the ranks.
