Number One On This Date

March 30: Today is 40th anniversary of the Columbia Records release of Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew.” Revered today as one of the greatest albums of all time in any genre, “Bitches Brew” shattered previous conceptions of what a jazz album could be. Among its many innovations was the introduction of tape editing and other forms of sound montage into the realm of jazz, an art form usually limited to straight performance recordings. Look out for a deluxe anniversary set from Sony Legacy later in 2010.
