Music was the form of expression that made Miles Davis famous, but it wasn’t the only way he expressed his creative genius -- he also was an accomplished visual artist whose paintings and drawings drew critical acclaim. His son, Erin Davis, and his nephew, Vincent Wilburn Jr., spoke with Tavis Smiley about a new book, Miles Davis: The Collected Artwork.

Miles Davis is one of the most influential jazz artists of all time. As one of the pioneers of bebop and leaders of fusing electronic and rock sounds with jazz, the Illinois-born trumpeter was well aware of his musical impact. But he had style chops, too.

...In this photo from 1967, Davis is wearing a leopard print tuxedo while onstage at the Newport Jazz Festival. The animal print detail isn't overpowering thanks to the cut of the black suit and the satin-trimmed lapels. Davis' undone collar and his iconic stoic glance also add a bit of edge.

...Miles Davis is still teaching us lessons on being cool.

“Miles was my all-time favorite photographic subject in any category because I was unable to take an uninteresting picture of this man’s face. He had such a great quality about him that was interesting from any angle.” – Herman Leonard
