“Miles was my all-time favorite photographic subject in any category because I was unable to take an uninteresting picture of this man’s face. He had such a great quality about him that was interesting from any angle.” – Herman Leonard

Jazz icon Miles Davis may be remembered as a trumpet-wielding master by most, but a new exhibition reveals his finesse with an entirely different set of instruments: pen and paper, brush and canvas.
Miles Davis: The Art of Cool opened Saturday at the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville, Calif., showcasing 35 of the legend's original sketches and paintings.
Known as one of the greatest, most influential jazz musicians of all time, Miles Davis was also an acclaimed artist. In the first US exhibition of his artwork, the Napa Valley Museum and the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center at Lincoln Theater present "Miles Davis: The Art of Cool" (June 8-July 28) featuring 35 of the artist's original sketches and oil paintings.
For Record Store Day 2013 (April 20), Sony Legacy released three Miles Davis titles exclusively on vinyl in their original mono formats: Milestones, Someday My Prince Will Come and ’Round About Midnight. Mark Wilder, Sony’s senior mastering engineer, frequently works with the original session reels of Davis’ Columbia catalog. From Battery Mastering Studios in midtown Manhattan, Wilder has brought Davis’ masterpieces into the 21st century, sometimes even bettering the original LPs, as is the case with the mono vinyl edition of Milestones.
Miles Davis was honored by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Center with an official Medallion ceremony taking place at 312 West 77th Street, the address of the brownstone townhouse purchased by Davis in 1958. The Upper West Side location served as both home and working environment for the artist for 25 years.
