I'm a fan (and you should be too) because... he's just so cool!
I got into Miles Davis by watching classic films. When I was a freshman in high school I started watching TCM a network that only plays classic films from the 1920's to the 1960's and depending on the event will play some from later decades. It's an amazing network, not only do they make it possible for a younger generation to view and hopefully appreciating, but it also exposes us to the culture. Jazz played a large party in films, as music today in films still do. They help create an atmosphere, and help us understand the character or scene better. While I don't recall specifically hearing a Miles Davis tune in a film I was watching, I do know that it stemmed from my love of Classic films. In most of the films I watch there were a lot of big band performances within the film, while I'm not much of a fan of big band music, it did lead me to Mr. Davis. While I'm still a novice in jazz I do know what I like. When I try and describe the kind of Miles Davis music I like I say the kind that puts me in a funk, which means mostly ballads. First came Muted Miles, then his legendary album Kind of Blue. Looking back there are many outside factors that lead me to Miles Davis. First my love of classic films, but also my love for french culture, and not to mention I had a crush in 6th grade on a boy who played the trumpet. I wish I could talk more intelligently about jazz and Miles Davis, but I just simply like listening to his music, especially his ballads when it's raining outside, kind of sounds sad and depressing but like I said it puts me i a funk, a good one. My senior year in high school I listened to him none stop while I was working on my portfolio for college. My art work was greatly influenced by what i was listening to. I ended up naming a couple pieces after the songs I was listening to at the time, like blue and green, and Autumn Leaves.
