I can't say exactly when I got my first "Miles-high," because I was so frequently exposed to, influenced by and saturated with styles of jazz and musical overall, from an early age. In childhood it was modern blues (rock'n'roll) that took me hostage and then sold me to its daddy, classic blues, so by the time I was a teenager (and a percussionist) I was into the originators as well as the innovators and the re-creators.
From childhood I remember taking fondly to Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and their contemporaries as well the musicians who'd worked in their bands. Everyone who played with Miles, especially during his fusion period, turned up in more and more of the music i listened to. When I was in high school (or just out) a new radio started in Baltimore MD, WEAA-FM. I was all over that right away and began turning friends on to it.
This was when I became more familiar with early Miles and the song he wrote as well as those he covered. Further on in adulthood, I pursued and maintained an immersion into all styles of jazz, and Miles had his not-so-silent-way of turning up, be it through older or current work.
As both a musician, an aficianado and a human being, I am forever affected by the talent, the vibe and the entire sub-culture that is the Miles Davis legacy. Music is the best high I've ever had in my life, and Miles, in his talent, as well as his name, showed us just how high he could take us...and still does.
