THE GENIUS OF MILES DAVIS PHOTO OF THE WEEK – Aug 31

This photo by Don Hunstein is found on pages 96-97 of the book accompanying the second Box Set, TBD, the second Metal Spine box contained in THE GENIUS OF MILES DAVIS the most comprehensive and lavishly packaged collection ever dedicated to a single musical artist.

Miles Davis and the great arranger, Gil Evans, were born to work together. Gil was in love with Miles’s haunting, melancholy sound, and Miles was in love with Gil’s masterful arrangements which were impeccably tailored to his sound.

Their collaboration produced three absolute masterpieces – Miles Ahead, Porgy & Bess, and Sketches Of Spain. Never before had Miles’s lyricism been framed by such beautiful and sensitive writing. Miles said of Gil Evans, ” . . . he would call me up at 3 a.m. and tell me, ‘If you’re ever depressed, Miles, just listen to “Springsville”‘ (a stunning track from the album, Miles Ahead).
